When Susan returns to the Cornish bay where she was befriended by R. Dragon, she finds him absent. Instead, he has left a story of his youth in the court of King Arthur. Disgraced after a bout of greed, the dragon has been sent to scour pots in the royal kitchens, where he is joined by Beaumains, a mysterious would-be young knight, and a very large scullion. Then a damsel in distress arrives, begging King Arthur for a champion. To everybody's surprise, Beaumains gets the job - alongside the dragon and the scullion. They set off on a perilous quest, not knowing the the evil Morgan le Fay has other plans.
Very funny, this delightful adventure is almost as good as its predecessor, and should be brought back into print for a new generation to love.
