Omar Kureishi wrote more in his last years than ever in his life. And in these years he was in a visible hurry to shape into books his published writings; Ebb and Flow, almost symbolically, he could not hand over to his publishers, Ferozsons.
As with the eternal Ebb and Flow of time and tide, we all return to the oceans of eternity, to the Almighty. So has Omar Kureishi. Ebb and Flow, this last of his collections appears after he is no more.
Omar Kureishi was a man with a many splendoured diversity . A journalist, a writer, broadcaster, media man on the professional side. And a son, brother, father, friend, mentor and a lifetime of inspiration to others. He had a tough unyielding exterior, but was considerate, caring within. To get to know this was a long journey.
Deeply pragmatic, but paradoxically equally idealistic all his life, if there was one passion that drove him, sustained him, or he persevered with, it was self expression. And this he endeavoured to beautify all the time, a natural craftsman with words, almost woven like exquisite tapestryan ultimate embellishment, at most times.
Omar Kureishi was a gem of a man; a pearl that the ebb and flow of time and tide gifted into our lives. Those lives that he touched, he transformed. He has returned to the oceans of eternity, to his Maker.
